WAREHAM, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – Three men were arrested Tuesday afternoon after a Mass. State trooper found marijuana and more than 170 grams of cocaine inside an SUV the men were traveling in on Route 25 in Wareham.
The trooper pulled over the black Dodge Durango for having excessively tinted windows and for speeding at about 3:30 p.m. The tints prevented the trooper from seeing clearly into the car, but he could tell there were several people inside moving around.
Additionally, the trooper noted the car smelled of freshly burned marijuana.
The eyes of the driver, later identified as Eric Brando, 39, of Mashpee, were bloodshot and glassy. After ordering Brando to roll down a rear window, the trooper saw a rear seat passenger slouched in his seat with his hands hiding under a sweatshirt on his lap.
The trooper ordered the rear passenger out of the SUV, and asked him why he had been moving around and had his hands hidden. The passenger, later identified as Jose Olivo-Rivera, 44, of Osterville, replied that he had done so because he was cold. The temperature at the time was 65 degrees outside.
The front seat passenger, later identified as Gunnar Cahoon, 41, of South Yarmouth, was asked to step out of the SUV as well. The trooper said Cahoon appeared nervous and his hands were visibly shaking.
Brando was then ordered out of the car and appeared unsteady on his feet. He told the trooper he had smoked a "blunt" in Rhode Island before driving to Wareham. He also said the three men had stopped at a friend's house, but he did not know where it was.
The trooper took inventory of the Durango and found a small bag of marijuana in the center console area, as well two bags the size of baseballs containing cocaine. The weight of both bags was approximately 177 grams.
Additionally, the trooper found four bottles of chemicals used by drug dealers to cut – or dilute – cocaine. An additional bag of marijuana was found in the rear seat during a K9 search.
Brando, Olivo-Rivera, and Cahoon were placed under arrest.
Brando has been charged with trafficking in cocaine, operating under the influence of drugs, obstructed/non-transparent windows, and speeding. A bail clerk set bail at $1,000.
Olivo-Rivera has been charged with trafficking in cocaine. A bail clerk set bail at $5,000 after troopers determined he has a pending drug trafficking case.
Cahoon has been charged with trafficking in cocaine. His bail was set at $500.
The defendants were expected to be arraigned Wednesday in Wareham District Court.
