Walsh says alcohol ads on T send the wrong message

BOSTON — The MBTA has decided to start allowing alcohol ads at select T stops, after a 5-year ban.

The ads were banned five years ago out of concern for the number of children who take the T. The governing board has decided to change that policy to make up for falling revenue. The ads will not be allowed at stops used by a lot of students, but Boston Mayor Marty Walsh says the ads send the wrong message to youth.

“I’m opposed to that. It's the wrong message to send to our young people. Those ads aren't targeted at adults. Those ads are targeted at little kids. You don't need revenue that much. Come up with other ways of finding revenue,” said Walsh.

From December to March, the T will allow the ads at selection stations as a test run.
