Walpole High School cancels school dances

WALPOLE, Mass. — Walpole High School has canceled all dances held at the school for the 2016-2017 school year.

FOX25 has learned that the school is trying to cut down on drunk students attending dances. It poses a danger to the students, and they don't want the dances to be a venue for intoxication.

“Kids will have little nips of alcohol and they'll just be on the floor, like you'll walk on the floor step on them,” Jonathan Stasiukevicius, a senior at Walpole HS said.

According to the school handbook, being under the influence of alcohol can lead to detention or suspension.

“I don't want to go to the point of searching every child as they come through the door. I just don't think that's good for the culture. I don't want to go to a point where we're breathalyzing every student,” Principal Stephen Imbusch said.

Any student participating in interscholastic athletics, intramural athletics, and extra-curricular activities must follow the Chemical Health policy. The policy states that any student found to consume or possess alcohol.

The ban does not extend to dances held off campus, like prom and semi-formals.
