Wachusett Mtn. looks for bump in business during February break

PRINCETON, Mass. – February break began Friday for many schools across New England, and ski resorts are looking forward to business after a season that’s had some ups and down.

At Wachusett Mountain in Princeton, the season started strong when cold weather in November allowed for snow making.

But in the months since, temperatures have ranged from frigid to above average with not much in between.

“We opened two weeks prior to scheduled opening. We’ve had great temps for making snow, and got a great start, and the it was too cold to ski during Christmas break. People stayed home because it was just too warm, so we kept making snow hoping they’d come and then it got super warm,” Wachusett Vice President Carolyn Stimpson said.

The roller coaster of temperatures means business is down about 10 percent this year, but employees at the mountain are hoping to make it up this week, despite temperatures forecast to be in the 50s.
