Video released of Boston terror suspect Usaamah Rahim's fatal shooting

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com / AP) - Authorities have released surveillance video showing the fatal shooting of a Boston man suspected of plotting to kill police officers.

The video, shown Monday at a news conference, comes from a restaurant across the street and the figures shown are blurry. Boston Police Commissioner William Evans and the FBI said it shows officers shooting 26-year-old Usaamah Rahim on June 2 in the city's Roslindale neighborhood after they attempted to question him about "terrorist-related information."

Boston's Joint Terrorism Task Force says it had Rahim under 24-hour surveillance and feared an attack could be imminent. Rahim was fatally shot after investigators said he refused to drop a military-style knife.

"He was intent in taking somebody out and it was either us or him," said Boston Police Commissioner William Evans. "And thank God, none of us were hit."

However a family attorney said the video shows no such weapon.

"The video does not show Mr. Rahim possessing, holding, or brandishing a weapon of any sort, much less a knife," Attorney Ronald Sullivan Jr. said in a statement. "The video reveals part of the story, but not the entire story.  The video shows that Mr. Rahim was shot by law enforcement, but there is no visual evidence of Mr. Rahim wielding a knife."

A representative told Fox25 that Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley has "made no conclusions and stressed that he won't make any judgments until all the facts are in. We consider this a very active investigation, and we're approaching it with a goal of total transparency.”

Rahim's nephew, David Wright, was arrested and arraigned last week on a charge of conspiracy with intent to obstruct a federal investigation.

Wright allegedly told Rahim to destroy his cellphone and laptop before carrying out an attack on police officers.

In the news conference Monday, law enforcement officials said they believed the plan Rahim was planning an imminent violent attack last Tuesday, which is why agents approached him before he got on a bus Tuesday morning.

The Suffolk County District Attorney's office and the FBI are both conducting separate investigations into the use of deadly force.
