The shooting came two days after Mayor Tom Menino and Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis held a meeting about summer safety.

"As you know, we have seen an increase in our city in shooting activities over the past few weeks," said the mayor in a press conference after the meeting. "It is not typical to see this type of increase at this point in the summer, it is worrisome for me."

Mayor Menino said it is also a great matter of concern for the people of Boston and Commissioner Davis. The mayor said he was briefed by law enforcement on measures they are taking to curb gun violence in the city. He said police officials are continuing to focus on "impact players, hot spot areas, and problem properties."

"Right now, 25 problem properties are targeted for increased enforcement," Menino explained. "The gang and drug units have taken 30 guns off the streets just this month."
