• Varitek nearing role with Red Sox

BOSTON (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) — As the Red Sox play their final home game of the season Wednesday night at Fenway Park, there is a report the Sox are close to signing Jason Varitek for a front office job. Some think he should be hired as the next manager.

FOX 25's Gene Lavanchy asked Boston Red Sox Chief Operating Officer Sam Kennedy Wednesday about Varitek on the Morning News.

Kennedy said he doesn't know exactly where the negotiations stand, but that general manager Ben Cherington would love to have someone like Jason Varitek – and other important members of the Red Sox alumni – join him and his effort to reconstruct this roster.

"Jason Varitek is the heart and soul of the Red Sox and what we're all about, so I'm hopeful that we'll get something done and he'll be part of our front office moving forward," Kennedy said.

Kennedy indicated speculation that Varitek could replace Bobby Valentine as manager is off base. "I think he'll be a great manager someday," he said. "But I think he'll be the first to tell you, he's got a lot to learn."

According to WEEI, it's possible that Varitek will head to Florida in the coming days to work with Red Sox minor leaguers taking part in the fall instructional league.
