Vape battery explodes in student's backpack

NORTHBRIDGE, Mass. — A school bus had to be evacuated Wednesday morning after a student's backpack burst into flames.

Northbridge District Fire Chief Robert Lachapelle said a call came in at 7:15 a.m. from a bus on Kelly Road.

School Resource Officer Thomas Dejordy tells Boston 25 News the bus was headed to Blackstone Valley Regional Technical School in Upton when a vape pen battery exploded. The driver immediately evacuated the bus and put out the fire.

Another bus arrived and each student was medically cleared before boarding.

The fire department dismantled the backpack and cleared the bus. They say no other dangers were found and there was nothing suspicious.

No one was injured.
