Valentine erupts on WEEI, calls managing Sox ‘miserable’

Bobby Valentine's weekly appearance on WEEI's "The Big Show" took a sharp turn on Wednesday.

When the struggling Red Sox manager was asked if he had "checked out" with 25 games remaining in the season he took exception.

"What an embarrassing thing to say. If I were there right now, I'd punch you right in the mouth," Valentine laughed. "How's that sound? Is that like I checked out?"

Valentine later commented on the "punch" threat, saying he was kidding.

"Didn't I go, 'Ha, ha?'" the embattled Valentine asked before his fourth-place team played the Seattle Mariners. "I don't think physical violence is necessary for 60-year-old people."

During the WEEI interview, Valentine also said this season has been miserable for him.

"This is what I chose to do. I think it's been miserable," said Valentine. "But it's also been part of my life's journey."

This week Sox owner John Henry and general manager Ben Cherington flew to Seattle to meet with team management. The trip fueled speculation that Valentine could be out as Red Sox manager.
