US Sen. Markey planning "ceremonial swearing-in"

BOSTON (AP) — U.S. Sen. Edward Markey is planning to hold a ceremonial swearing-in ceremony at Boston's historic Faneuil Hall.

Markey was actually sworn in last month by Vice President Joe Biden during a brief ceremony in the Senate chamber in Washington.

Thursday's event is a chance for more of the Democrat's supporters and members of the public to mark the start of his tenure in the Senate.

Markey defeated Republican Gabriel Gomez in a June special election to fill the seat left vacant by John Kerry's resignation from the Senate to become secretary of state.

Markey has spent the past few days touring the state in the run up to Thursday's evening event.

Markey is expected to address the crowd in what will be his first major speech in Massachusetts since election night.
