Refrigerant believed to be unknown hazardous material in Lawrence

LAWRENCE, Mass. — Emergency responders are on the scene of a hazardous material investigation Lawrence.

An unknown haze was reported in the basement of a commercial building on Lake Street around 6:30 p.m..

According to the State Fire Marshal, the incident is at Microsemi, a plating company.

“They found a haze in the building. Investigating further, it appears to be a chemical,” Lawrence Fire Chief Brian Moriarty said. “The haze had a slight odor to it. It started spreading to the Laundromat next door. We evacuated all of the buildings that are attached. Present time, we don't know what the odor is.”

About six employees from the business and 20 people from the laundromat were evacuated, but no one was taken to the hospital.

The response is at Tier 3, the most severe level for hazardous material responses.
