Unique lobster statue stolen in Plymouth

PLYMOUTH, Mass. — The search is for a five foot high statue of a lobster that was stolen overnight in Plymouth.

There are 29 large lobster statues around downtown Plymouth. Police said someone ripped one 75 pound lobster from its base in Nelson Park. They then made off with the lobster, which is named Sir-Loin and sponsored by Perry's Market

The statues was bolted and locked to a 700 pound block of cement.

Artist Diana Naples created Sir-Loin, and she told FOX25 that she’s upset. It took hundreds of hours to make the lobster by hand.

“Definitely heartbroken. Instantly when I heard about it this morning,” she said.

The Chamber of Commerce organized the statues around the city as part of a public arts project called the Plymouth Lobster Crawl. Each one is custom designed and hand painted by local artists.

“We've already received word there were two men in their 50's spotted in a pickup truck trying to steal another lobster on the waterfront last night around 1:30 in the morning,” Kevin O'Reilly, executive director of the Plymouth Area Chamber Of Commerce, told FOX25.

As reported on FOX25 News at 6, the town believes other lobsters were targeted. On Saturday, some of them were moved from the more isolated locations. As people got wind of what happened, the frustration grew.

"I was horrified. I was like where is it. This is awful,” Carletta Butler, a Plymouth resident, told FOX25.

Many of the businesses around town are also gathering donations to help replace the statue. British Beer Company in Plymouth received several donations right away.
