Unidentified chemicals found in Hanover home after break-in

HANOVER, Mass. — Several homes were evacuated Tuesday afternoon after a break-in suspect was arrested and unidentified chemicals were found inside a Hanover home.

Police said they were called to the home on Bates Way around 4:45 p.m. when the homeowner found someone inside who wasn’t supposed to be there.

Police arrived and arrested that person on the first floor, and during the arrest they noticed a “peculiar odor.”

Police searched the home and found a pail with something inside causing what appeared to be steam rising up.

Officers cleared the home and had the suspect taken to South Shore Hospital for a medical evaluation.

Hanover police and Hanover firefighters evacuated the home and several nearby homes while a hazardous materials team removed the unidentified substances from the building.

Everyone has since been allowed to return to their homes.

The suspect has not yet been identified, and police have not announced what type of chemicals were found inside the building.
