UMass student falls 60 feet on hike with frat brothers

DEERFIELD, Mass. (AP) - Police say a hiker on Mount Sugarloaf had to be rescued after falling at least 60 feet while out with his fraternity brothers from the University of Massachusetts.

Deerfield police say the student suffered serious injuries in the fall Saturday at Mount Sugarloaf State Reservation in South Deerfield. Officials estimated he fell between 60 and 100 feet.

Rescuers needed to get through almost a half-mile of thick brush to reach the man and bring him to safety. Officials did not identify the man but said his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
