UMass Lowell establishing center to create high tech fabrics

LOWELL, Mass. — Weave through the streets of Lowell, and it’s a reminder of an era that used to be.

Empty textiles are still standing, some 200 years after the launch of the industrial revolution.

Using their history, Lowell has a comeback plan – once again rooted in textiles.

In one of the former mills, UMass Lowell is setting up a fabric discovery center. The center will allow students to create fabric prototypes and learn the elements of design and manufacturing, and how to blend that with electronics.

"It's part of a bigger national effort to increase advanced manufacturing in the US," said Julie Chen with UMass Lowell.

Students will be working to create fabric that can monitor sweat to give insights into health, including hydration, heart rate and blood sugar.

High tech often means a high price tag, so UMass is partnering with local businesses, which will provide internships while being able to utilize the technology.

Chen see it as a way to revitalize the industry for which Lowell was known.

Not bringing the old back, but being able to support the development and expansion of the new,” she said.
