UMass Boston to begin offering student housing on campus in 2018

BOSTON (AP) — The University of Massachusetts is planning to offer student housing at its Boston campus beginning in September 2018.

UMass President Marty Meehan said Thursday that it has long been a goal of the public university to provide on-campus housing at the school's Boston campus.

He said the 1,000-bed residential complex will be built through a public-private partnership.

Under the deal, the UMass Building Authority will contract with Capstone Development to lease a portion of the UMass Boston campus next to the Clark Athletic Center to build the $120 million housing complex.

The housing will be owned and operated by a nonprofit management entity. UMass-Boston will oversee student life at the facility.

UMass-Boston has seen its enrollment grow from nearly 12,000 students in 2005 to 17,000 students now.
