Two arrested in connection with New Bedford slaying

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) - Authorities have arrested two people in connection with a fatal weekend shooting in New Bedford.

The Bristol district attorney's office said in a statement that 21-year-old Elito Mendes is charged with carrying an illegal firearm, armed robbery, and the obstruction of justice; while 27-year-old Samir Baptista is charged with accessory to murder before the fact.

Both are scheduled to be arraigned Monday in New Bedford District Court.

Both face charges in connection with the death of 31-year-old Sharone Stafford.

Police and paramedics responded to reported gunshots shortly after 11:30 p.m. and found Stafford lying on Winsor Street near the intersection of Crapo Street. He died at St. Luke's Hospital.

An autopsy is scheduled.

No additional details of the slaying were disclosed.
