It seems like turkeys are taking over some local communities.
Recently, Boston 25 News has received multiple videos from viewers of turkeys sitting on fences, resting on swing sets, or just roaming around. But the question on everyone's mind has been why?
Wayne Petersen, the Massachusetts Audubon Director of the Important Bird Areas Program, told Boston 25 a lot of it has to do with food.
"At this time of the year, they feed on acorns, so wherever there are a lot of Oak trees and plenty of acorns on the ground, it's not unusual to see a lot of turkeys," said Petersen.
That could explain why some neighborhoods are seeing so many.
"They are very bold. They just walk into the street and people stop for them," said Petersen. "They don't move at all. Even when they go fast, they go slow."
Petersen said that wild turkeys are actually very shy creatures. Typically, male turkeys are only aggressive during mating season, which is already over this year. But as cities and towns continue to grow, turkeys are finding ways to fit right in.
Petersen says there's no need to be afraid of turkeys, but it's a good idea to give them their space.
