3 rescued after tug boat sinks in Boston Harbor

BOSTON — Three people were rescued Tuesday morning after a tug boat sank in the Boston Harbor.

Captain Joseph Maloney Jr. with the Boston Harbor Pilot Association told FOX25 that the distress call went out just before sunrise. The call was for a small tugboat called the Emily Anne that was taking on water at the mouth of the North Channel to Boston Harbor.

Captain Maloney, who had been on board the boat Chelsea, said he and his crew were about a half mile away from the boat in distress. By the time they got to the tug boat, it was completely submerged in water.

All three men on board the Emily Anne were pulled from the water. Captain Maloney said the three rescued men were "in good shape" and in warm clothes.

“Given the nature of the emergency, if not for the quick and heroic response of the Chelsea crew, their lives may have been lost,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Darin Crozier, a watchstander at Coast Guard Sector Boston.

Maloney told FOX25 Captain Doug Richard was aboard the Emily Anne when it sank and helped rescue the other two crew members.

“He put the two young crew members on the boat first, and he got out last.  True Captain,” Maloney said.
