Trooper struck by suspected drunk driver

LEICESTER, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – A state trooper as well as a suspect in his cruiser were both taken to a hospital after the vehicle was struck by a suspected drunken driver in Leicester.

Officials said Trooper Sergio Figueiredo had stopped a Jeep on Stafford Street when the crash happened at about 2:45 a.m. Monday.

Figueiredo had taken a shoplifting suspect from the vehicle and put her in his cruiser. A short time later the cruiser was rear-ended by a sedan. Officers said the cruiser was pushed into the Jeep in front of it.

The driver of the vehicle, 20-year-old Jesse D'Amelio was arrested on charges of operating under the influence, possession of a class E narcotic, marked lanes violation and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

Figueiredo, D'Amelio and the shoplifting suspect were all taken to UMass-Lakeside to be checked. All three were treated and released.
