Trooper helps delivery baby on Route 90

BLANFORD, Mass. — A state trooper pulled over on Route 90 to help what he thought was a disabled car and ended up helping deliver a baby.

On Saturday around 1:30 a.m., Trooper Carlos Nunez saw a car in the breakdown lane and when he approached the car, he saw a woman in the back seat, saying she was in labor.

Nunez immediately radioed for an ambulance, but after a quick medical assessment, he realized the ambulance wasn't going to get there in time.

The trooper prepared for a delivery and shortly thereafter, the woman gave birth in the car.

Nunez helped the mother and newborn until Westfield EMS arrived on scene.  Both mother and child were transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield for treatment.
