Trash truck driver injured after being hit while getting receptacle

AUBURN, Mass. – The driver of a trash truck is in critical condition after he was run over by his own truck in Auburrn.

The crash happened around 2 p.m. when the 42-year-old man was outside of the truck *to get a trash barrel.

“There is a parking brake, and there is another braking system. It is possible that the braking system failed or the driver may not have activated it correctly,” Auburn Police Sgt. Scott Mills said.

The crash happened on Manor Road, and several people who work nearby ran to help.

“I heard a woosh, a loud woosh, I looked up and saw the truck and a man laying on the street,” John Murtha said. “He was in bad condition. Both his legs were broken.”

The driver spent several hours in the hospital undergoing surgery.
