Towns using drones to track beach erosion

SANDWICH, Mass. — With high tides forecasted for this weekend, citizens in Sandwich are wondering if the new sand dune they spent millions on will hold up.

"Will it be worth it? I don't know," said Scott Kestenbaum.

Winter has not been kind to many shoreline towns, with strong waves eroding the beach away. Towns are becoming more aggressive with their documentation of how much bean they are losing.

Drones can gather video a lot quicker than crews on the ground and that helps cities and towns apply for funding faster.

"They can go through it frame by frame to see if there is any damage and apply for any funding," said Chris DiBona with Brewster Ambulance Service.

Sandwich last year spent $3 million on the dune project and they are hoping to catch a break this year. They'll be examining the before and after shots from the cameras to see how much erosion occurs.
