Tom 'Jay' Jaworski, longtime Mass. announcer, dies

GREAT BARRINGTON (AP) - Tom Jaworski, known to Berkshire County radio listeners as Tom Jay during his more than 40 years as a newscaster, has died.

Jaworski's step-daughter, Jodie McClay, said he suffered a heart attack at his home in Great Barrington last Thursday and died early Wednesday at a hospital in Springfield. He was 70.

Jaworksi worked for WSBS-AM in Great Barrington from 1967 until his retirement in 2008, serving in the positions of staff announcer, news director and chief engineer.

He also served for nearly a decade as president of the Massachusetts Associated Press Broadcasters Association.

Jaworski, who leaves his wife, Marilyn, two stepdaughters and three grandchildren, served in the U.S. Navy from 1961 to 1966.

A funeral Mass is scheduled for Saturday at St. Peter's Church in Great Barrington.
