Toddler injured, Salem man charged with attempted murder

SALEM, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A Salem man is facing attempted murder charges for his alleged role in the injury of a 2-year-old child.

Officials tell FOX 25 Juan Javier Claudio was held without bail after his Friday arraignment. The 28-year-old is charged with attempted murder, assault and battery on a child resulting in serious injury, and aggravated assault and battery.

Investigators tell FOX 25 the child was transported to a local hospital after spending three days with Claudio and his girlfriend. The child reportedly sustained bruises to her face, ears, stomach, back, leg, neck, and bottom of her foot. Medical examiners also claim the child was severely strained and had an air pocket in her neck. Test results on her liver suggest she sustained blunt trauma to her stomach.

The child has been removed from her mother's care. Claudio and his girlfriend's children have also been removed from their home. Police say Claudio was arrested for a domestic incident involving his girlfriend, who is pregnant, during their investigation.

Claudio is being held until his dangerousness hearing. Officials say the child has since recovered.
