Thousands gather at Boston Common to protest inauguration

BOSTON — Chants of “Not my president!” echoed through Boston Common Friday night as thousands gathered to protest the inauguration of President Donald Trump.

The event, called "Resist Trump: Occupy Inauguration," drew members of LGBTQ, Black Lives Matter, women's and immigrant groups, among others.

“Donald trump and the feelings that he has incited in America right now are absolutely unacceptable," said Hayley Scanlon. "And he is promoting racism, homophobia, sexism, misogyny."

“I think the sentiment that's spread by Donald Trump - the things he says - puts us in danger and I can't support anyone who spreads those kind of things,” Scanlon's friend Maya added.

But not everyone shared the same sentiment. Two Northeastern University students insisted the country must accept the person who won the electoral vote and was sworn into office.

“You can't make a decision about someone before they do something," said one of the students, who asked to remain anonymous. "You can have opinions about someone before they do something, but we need to see it through. We need to give everyone a reasonable chance."

The protests in Boston were peaceful Friday night, but police and HAZMAT teams were prepared after hundreds of people were arrested in Washington D.C. earlier in the day.
