THEY'RE OFF: Millions to hit the roads this Memorial Day weekend

BOSTON — Stormy conditions overnight would normally make for a difficult morning commute, and though fewer cars are expected on the roads Friday morning, the volume will increase as millions plan to hit the road for the long holiday weekend.

AAA says 39.3 million people plan on traveling 50 miles or more from home this weekend. Included in that number is about 900,000 people from Massachusetts – the largest number since 2005.

MassDOT is shutting down construction work at noon Friday and won’t resume until 11 p.m. Monday to help ease traffic.

Still, MassDOT expects traffic to be the worst Friday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., and then all day Monday coming back home through about 7 p.m.

If you’re headed to the Cape, one of the main congested routes on holidays, all lanes of the Sagamore Bridge will be open all weekend.

Aside from the westbound Mass Pike, headed north to New Hampshire and Maine likely won’t be much of a fun drive either.

Motorists are advised to be aware of the traffic ahead of time and to expect delays as you hit the road.
