Teenage volunteer firefighter saves woman from fire

ACUSHNET (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) A 19-year-old volunteer firefighter saved a woman's life during an overnight fire in Acushnet.

Fire officials tell FOX 25 the blaze broke out at about 11 p.m. Sunday on Coulombe Street.

Adam Hebert pulled a 52-year-old woman from the home and she was transported to the hospital via medical helicopter by 1 a.m. Monday.

FOX 25 spoke with Hebert late Monday morning. The teen says his training prepared him for the fire. He also praised two of his fellow firefighters for helping to save the woman.

Acushnet Fire Chief Kevin Gallagher tells FOX 25 that Hebert isn't old enough to participate in the department's tradition. After a firefighter makes a rescue, the chief usually buys them a drink.

Chief Gallagher says Hebert has only been on the job for six months and that Sunday night was his first major fire.

The woman who was pulled from the blaze is being treated at a hospital in Providence, R.I. for burns to her feet and smoke inhalation.

This is not the first fire at the Coulombe Street home. Chief Gallagher shared an article with FOX 25 from 21 years ago about another fire at the house. One person was also rescued in that blaze.
