Teen rescued after falling through ice on Attleboro pond

ATTLEBORO, Mass. — An Attleboro teen is recovering after falling through thin ice this weekend.

The 13-year-old girl was one of three who fell through the ice while retrieving a football, the other two were able to get out on their own.

“To be quite honest I said a quick prayer and just hoped to do what I needed to do that day,” Attleboro Firefighter Stephen Marcotte said.

Part of the problem for Rachel Sullivan was that she doesn’t know how to swim.

“One of the suggestions was to position myself between the ice and the child and act as a barrier between the ice and keeping her afloat above the waterline and protect her airway,” Marcotte said.

All three teens were taken to the hospital and are fine. Rachael attributed that to the help they received from firefighters like Marcotte.

“He was pretty awesome. He was definitely focused on his job and I’m grateful for that,” she said.

Because of the warm temperatures, people are advised to stay off the ice during this winter break week.
