Team of three helped save lost child after boat capsized in Buzzards Bay

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. — After a boat capsized on Buzzards Bay Wednesday, a team of three that came together to rescue a missing child.

“I didn’t realize the severity of the situation until I saw the mother and father on top of the boat, screaming that their child was still trapped inside,” said Environmental Police Lt. Matthew Bass, who was on a rescue boat.

Twelve people were on board, including eight children, when the boat flipped. One boy was still missing when Bass arrived.

Bass said he used goggles to try to find the missing boy, but the boy was too deep.

Luckily, diver, Michael Margulis was nearby and saw what was happening.

“I was already in my wet suit and had my dive gear on board so I thought I could offer a hand,” he said.

He dove down and quickly found the boy, visible with his bright life vest, trapped underneath the boat.

Margulis pulled him up and Bass and Marion Assistant Harbormaster Adam Murphy jumped into action, immediately starting CPR.

“I honestly think in the situation you fall to the level of training and your training takes over and you do the very best you can,” said Murphy.

There was also a sailing crew nearby that helped get everyone else from that overturned boat onto his boat to safety.

The boy was taken to a Boston hospital for treatment.
