Tanker rollover, fuel spill prompts major road closures overnight

CHELMSFORD, Mass. (AP) - Massachusetts State Police say a fuel tanker rolled over on Route 3 near the Lowell Connector shortly after 11 p.m., spilling some of its fuel on the highway.

The spill prompted a large Hazmat team response. As a precaution, authorities closed all roads within 1,000 feet of the crash. Closures included Route 3 northbound at Route 129 and Route 3 southbound at Route 495. Most of the roads were reopened by 7 a.m. Saturday.

Dave Procopio of the Massachusetts State Police says the cause of the crash remains under investigation and authorities are looking into whether the tanker rolled after being cut off by another vehicle.

Investigators say the truck was carrying 11,000 gallons of fuel. There is no word on how much of that fuel spilled onto the road.

No injuries have been reported.
