Suspected fentanyl overdose prompts hazmat response in Saugus

SAUGUS, Mass. — A hazmat crew was called to Wickford Street in Saugus Sunday afternoon.

Saugus police responded to a report of an overdose on Wickford Street just before 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Officers located fentanyl upon arrival, prompting a hazmat response.

Police say a 19-year-old male was taken to Salem Hospital. His condition is unknown at this time.

Police say this is the first call like this in Saugus.

"Well I'm proud of my men and women of police and fire in this town and they respond to hazardous scenes every day. And this is one of those situations. Hopefully this is a case of exercising caution,” said Chief Michael Newbury.
