Suspect in Methuen bank robbery arrested

METHUEN, Mass. (AP) — Authorities have captured a man they believe may be responsible for a string of Merrimack Valley bank robberies.

Rafael Beamud Jr. of Lowell was arrested by the FBI on Tuesday after being detained by police in Salem, N.H.

An FBI spokeswoman says the 32-year-old Beamud is scheduled to be charged Wednesday with robbing a TD Bank in Methuen on Feb. 21 based on fingerprint evidence. But authorities say he may be involved in about a dozen bank robberies in the region by a suspect known as the Merrimack Valley Bandit.

The suspect seen in surveillance footage from several robberies shows a masked man often with a gun.

Methuen Chief Joseph Solomon tells The Eagle-Tribune (http://bit.ly/11Dkb5X ) the arrest was the result of hard work by several area departments.
