Suspect gets gun into Lowell police station

LOWELL, Mass. (AP) — Lowell police are conducting an internal investigation after a suspect arrested during a brawl at a private club managed to get a loaded handgun into the police station.

Police say the man with the 9mm gun was one of five people arrested early Sunday morning and transported in a van to the station.

Department protocol calls for the arresting officer as well as the van driver to frisk arrestees. The gun was found in the man's jacket by a civilian at the booking window.

The Sun (http://bit.ly/WKNpAu ) reports that the arresting officer did not frisk the suspect because of interference from others at the club.

The suspect was charged with disorderly conduct, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, unlawful carrying of a dangerous weapon, and assault and battery.
