Sumner tunnel to close for panel inspection

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- The Sumner Tunnel will be closed overnight Sunday into Monday as crews inspect wall panels.

The Massachusetts Dept. of Transportation said they will test the stability of 2,400 panels in the tunnel. This after a full inspection of the Callahan Tunnel prompted the removal of 120 wall panels.

A 10 foot by 4 foot panel fell in the Callahan on Dec. 21, prompting those inspections.

The Sumner Tunnel was built in the 1930s and carries vehicles from East Boston/Logan Airport to Downtown Boston. Drivers are encouraged to use the I-90 Ted Williams Tunnel Westbound or the Tobin Bridge Inbound as alternate routes during the closure.

The tunnel will be closed from 9 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday. MassDOT said that the inspection may be postponed due to inclement weather. For updates, follow @MassDOT on Twitter.
