Suffolk County DA enters Boston's mayoral election

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley is running for mayor of Boston.

In a written statement Wednesday, Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley said his entire career has been "dedicated to giving voice to the voiceless and hope to the most poor and vulnerable."

He also said Boston needs a mayor who can make tough decisions, even when they offend powerful interests, and who can work with business and neighborhood groups.

Current Boston Mayor Tom Menino announced last week that he would not seek re-election. His decision was expected to trigger a political stampede of would-be successors.

City Councilor John Connolly had formally declared his candidacy before Menino made the surprise announcement last week. Other potential candidates said to be eyeing the seat include state Rep. Martin Walsh, former City Council candidate Will Dorcena, and City Councilor Felix Arroyo.

As district attorney, Conley is the chief law enforcement officer for the cities of Boston, Chelsea, Revere and Winthrop. He was appointed to the office in February of 2002 and was elected in his own right later that year and again in 2006.
