(MyFoxBoston.com) – A new study has placed welfare benefits in Massachusetts under more scrutiny for being too generous.
The Cato Institute in Washington D.C. says Massachusetts is the third most generous state in the country when it comes to welfare assistance. They say the average recipient gets more than $42,500 a year.
The lead author of study titled "The Work Versus Welfare Trade-Off: 2013" says those who get government assistance are not dumb or lazy, but simply use the system.
The study claims welfare pays out more than a job with an hourly wage of $12.00 in Massachusetts, as well as in Hawaii, Alaska, Connecticut, Washington D.C., New York, and Rhode Island.
The Department of Transitional Assistance and EBT fraud have been embroiled in controversy for mismanagement after a recent state audit revealed benefits were given to dead people. They have also been the subject of criticism after recent cases involving the misuse of EBT cards.
