Student allegedly brought marijuana-laced cookies to Hingham school

HINGHAM, Mass. — Police are investigating an incident at the South Shore Educational Collaborative School where a student allegedly brought cookies containing marijuana to school.

According to police, the student distributed the cookies to several other students.

"Five students had consumed marijuana laced cookies and were under the influence or high from marijuana," said Hingham Police Sgt. Steven Dearth

Aged between 16 to 17, the students who ingested the cookies were evaluated by the school nurse, who believed them to be under the influence of marijuana. None of them required medical attention but one teen was transported to an area hospital for another ailment.

The parents of the five students involved were contacted but no charges have been filed at this time.

The Hingham Police Department is actively investigating this incident.

Hank Perrin, principal of the South Shore High School in Hingham, said the school has identified the student responsible for bringing the cookies to school.

According to Mr. Perrin, the student will receive disciplinary action as the school has several programs that can help him. However, this appears to be a one-time incident.

However, police say that the student who brought the cookies could face criminal charges.

"Certainly we would look for charges for that if appropriate," said Sgt. Dearth.

Police say that, unfortunately, edible marijuana items like brownies and gummy bears are tough to identify since they look exactly like regular snacks.

"That is a challenge, it's harder for schools - it's harder for police just to see when it's in the edible form," said Sgt. Dearth.
