Stoughton still reeling from death of 3-year-old Shayla Lutz

STOUGHTON (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – The Stoughton community is still reeling from the death of a 3-year-old girl who was hit by a box truck on Friday afternoon.

Family and friends have left mementos on Central Avenue where Shayla Lutz was struck and killed while walking with her mother to pick up her brother and sister from Hansen Elementary School

"I just think it's really sad," Colin Sanda told FOX 25's Crystal Haynes.

Police in Stoughton said that neither alcohol nor speed were factors in the crash. The driver of the truck did stop after striking the girl and was interviewed by police.

Residents familiar with the area said motorists should be more careful, especially since there are many young children in the area.

Concerned citizens also suggested that the town put up signs to highlight the crosswalks.

"It's definitely busy. It's a busy road, especially when kids are getting in and out of school. We hope the kids take the right safety precautions, but truly, just a tragic accident," Bob Sanda said.

Investigators said the accident did not happen in the crosswalk, and it is not likely that the driver will face criminal charges.
