State Police to assist with patrols in Brockton after recent violence

BROCKTON, Mass. — State police will soon be assisting patrol officers in Brockton at the request of the Plymouth County District Attorney.

DA Timothy Cruz said despite a decline in violent crimes over the past 18 months, a deadly shooting at a city-approved block party this past weekend was cause for concern.

“Although some would say that an uptick in gun-related violence during the summer months is not a surprise, it is unacceptable to me. We must work to maintain a sense of safety and security for Brockton residents whatever the time of year, and that is why I have asked for additional State Police support,” Cruz said.

Residents of Brockton agree.

“On my own street, I've had six or seven cruisers come up because they were chasing somebody with a gun,” one person said.

Concerned neighbors questioned Mayor Bill Carpenter Monday, who promised more patrols on the weekends and more detectives on the cases.

“Our strategy is to get the shooters off the streets as quickly as possible/we know who the associates are involved, they can expect a lot of attention from us in the near future,” Carpenter said.
