State police arrest two wanted for string of armed robberies

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Police in Rhode Island and Massachusetts arrested two men who they believe are responsible for more than 15 armed convenience store robberies that spanned both states.

Mass. State Police say Rhode Island police engaged in a car chase with suspects in armed robberies in Uxbridge, Mass., and two different locations in Rhode Island on Jan. 4.

During the chase, the car crashed and both suspects fled on foot. Rhode Island police then arrested 23-year-old Monchi Castillo-Cosme, of Springfield.

Police claim they found evidence that connected the men to the armed robberies after searching the car.

Police then learned that Castillo-Cosme and his accomplice, who had yet to be arrested, matched descriptions of two men who had shown guns while robbing gas stations and stores along Route 91 in Massachusetts, including in Northampton and Greenfield.

An investigation led both Rhode Island and Massachusetts state police to the man they believe is Castillo-Cosme's accomplice, a 16-year-old whose name was not released because he is a juvenile.

The juvenile was arrested at Springfield High School Friday and arraigned in Springfield District Court. The teen could also be rendited to Rhode Island to face more charges.

Massachusetts State Police said both men are facing additional charges connected to the robberies in this state.
