• State: Expect heavy traffic on Mass. Pike

BOSTON (AP) - State transportation officials are warning motorists to expect heavy traffic on the Massachusetts Turnpike at the end of the holiday weekend, even though they are taking measures to ease traffic as much as possible.

The highway experienced a 45-mile backup on Friday as people headed west for a peek at fall foliage.

Just as much traffic is expected on the return trip Monday even with fully staffed toll plazas.

A spokeswoman for the state Transportation Department tells The Boston Globe (http://bo.st/VPSQw0 ) the agency will "prioritize" to make sure the busiest interchanges are fully staffed.

The department is trying to avoid a repeat of the Easter 2009 weekend when long delays caused by understaffed toll plazas angered motorists and led to the resignation of the agency's director.
