38-year-old suspect in Chelsea standoff identified

CHELSEA, Mass. — The suspect found dead after an hours-long standoff with police in Chelsea late Monday night has been identified as Kelly Pastrana.

A chaotic scene unfolded on Warren Avenue just after 9 p.m. Monday when police responded to reports of a man who was threatening to shoot his wife.

"After the initial domestic assault, evidence suggests Mr. Pastrana deliberately set fire to the house," Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley said in a news conference Tuesday afternoon.

Pastrana died from a gunshot wound to the abdomen and burns from the fire, Conley said at the news conference.

Conley said his office will eventually release the full file on the investigation.

According to Conley, Pastrana, 38, chased his wife and a small child out of the home and fired at least one shot into the air. After the woman the child ran off, Pastrana returned to the home and shot at a responding Chelsea Police Officer, Conley said.

Several police departments from the surrounding area were called to assist at the scene.

Dozens of officers surrounded the home, which caught fire with the man still barricaded inside.

As first responders tried desperately to extinguish the blaze from a safe distance, nearby homes were evacuated.

“I saw all of these police vehicles, Saugus, Chelsea, Revere, and I stayed and observed what was going on,” neighborhood resident Joe Camerario said. “Then around 9:50 p.m., I heard two gunshots and the police came out and told everyone to move away and go home.”
