Somerville officer says hero surgeon restarted his heart after gunshots

SOMERVILLE, Mass. — The story of the hero surgeon who helped save two Boston police officers reached thousands on social media, including a former police detective saved by Dr. David King.

Mario Oliveira was serving a warrant on Nov. 2, 2010 when he was shot six times.

He was rushed to Mass General Hospital where a trauma team led by Dr. King saved his life.

Tuesday night, FOX25 shared the story about how after running the Boston Marathon in 2013, Dr. King went straight into surgery helping the survivors. Just last week he worked through the night after two BPD officers were shot in East Boston.

Oliveira told FOX25 Dr. King credits his years serving in the Army as a combat surgeon for teaching him how to deal with trauma cases.

That experience was especially helpful when Oliveira died twice on the operating table and Dr. King manually started it again.

“My heart had stopped beating twice. I died twice and he cut my diaphragm reached in and squeezed my heart, reached in and got it back going again,” Oliveira said.

The two have become friends, and Oliveira said he thanks Dr King for allowing him to return home and see his son again.
