Some taking stand against new section of pipeline in Mass.

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) — Possible gas leaks and the impact to property are two reasons why some say they're taking a stand against plans for a new section of pipeline in Massachusetts.

The pipeline is still in a preliminary phase and if everything goes as planned, construction wouldn't be complete until 2017. Spectra Energy is looking for federal permission to add 10 miles of pipeline through towns like Franklin and Millis. Residents say they want to know what's in store for them before construction begins.

One resident said he didn't know about the upgrade until FOX25 arrived at his home.

Spectra says the project will have minimal impact on the environment because construction will take place in an existing right of way. Still, critics are worried about more long term damage to the environment and a small group says that we should focus on renewable energy and conservation of energy.

Spectra said they held public meetings last month and expect to have more in the fall to educate residents.
