Some South Coast beaches closed after reported shark sighting

WESTPORT, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Mass. State Police say fishermen spotted two sharks in the waters off Westport Wednesday.

State Police took to Twitter to tell the public about the sighting. They say the sharks were reportedly seen near Gooseberry Island.

Swimmers were evacuated from Horseneck Beach and Gooseberry Island after the reported sighting. Officials said Horseneck, Gooseberry, and Demarest LLoyd State Park will be closed for swimming until Thursday at the earliest. Beach goers could stay on the beach, but were not allowed to go into the water.

There is no word on what species of shark was believed to be spotted.

The waters off Westport are not unfamiliar territory for sharks. In 2012, a 13-foot Great White shark carcass washed up on a rocky shoreline in Westport.
