The National Weather Service says snowfall totals are expected to be anywhere from an inch to six inches of snow across the state, with more in northern and western parts of the state.

State police were reporting spinouts across the state, which is delaying already slow-moving traffic. Most of the major thoroughfares around Boston were experiencing delays of more than 40 minutes at some points.

Traffic was backed up on I-93 South from Derry, N.H. to Boston.

The snow is expected to taper off later Wednesday morning and turn to rain in some areas.

Most school closings and delayed openings were in central and western parts of the state.

Schools were open in Boston.
