MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Investigators are piecing together what happened to a Connecticut mother who disappeared during a fishing trip with her son.

The investigation spans hundreds of miles and involves agencies in Vermont, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Carman lived in Connecticut, about 100 miles south of where her son, Nathan, lives in Vermont. Nathan remains at the center of the investigation.

MYSTERY SURROUNDING GRANDFATHER'S MURDER

Nathan's grandfather and Linda's father, John Chakalos, was found shot and killed inside his home just days before Christmas in 2013. When he died, he left behind an estate worth millions.

FOX25 uncovered court documents that show the 87-year-old left more than $44 million to his family.

Both Nathan and Linda were both named suspect in the grandfather's murder.

In 2014, police requested a warrant for Nathan's arrest, but he was never charged.

On page six of the eight page police affidavit from 2014, it says, "a warrant for the arrest of Nathan Carman was submitted for the charge of murder, the warrant was returned unsigned in July of 2014, with the request for further information."

It's unclear what the further information was. %

Investigators said they found inconsistencies in Nathan's story. He was the last one to see his grandfather alive and, according to a police affidavit, he threw away his computer and other pieces of potential evidence.

According to the Boston Herald, Linda was also named a suspect in the murder.  Linda's former attorney told the Herald she was initially a suspect due to accusations that she assaulted Chakalos two years prior to his death in a hospital ward. According to the paper, Linda and her father had gotten into an argument over money and Nathan's treatment.

Thursday night, police in Middletown, Connecticut searched Linda's home.

No one has been arrested for the grandfather's murder. Linda remains missing.
