Skating path, holiday market opening on city hall plaza

BOSTON — Boston's expansive brick City Hall Plaza is being remade into a holiday wonderland this winter.

Democratic Mayor Marty Walsh says "Boston Winter" will feature New England's first custom-designed outdoor skating path spanning roughly 11,000 square feet.

It will also offer a holiday shopping market complete with Santa's House, a pedal-powered holiday tree and a performance stage for local artists and community groups.

The area will be open seven days a week starting in early December. The rink will be open through February.

The effort is sponsored by Berkshire Bank, which has agreed to support seasonal activities on the plaza over the next three years.

Sean A. Gray, Berkshire Bank's chief operating officer, says "Boston Winter" will be akin to the popular ice rink and market in New York's Bryant Park.
