Should jaywalking fines double for those using a phone?

BOSTON — Those jaywalking while using a cell phone or wearing earbuds would face a doubled fine under a new bill proposed on Beacon Hill recently.

Representative Colleen Garry (D-Dracut) proposed the bill that would institute a fine for pedestrians who cross against signals and disallows crossing diagonally unless specifically permitted in an intersection.

However, a $25 first offense fine would double if the person was using a cell phone or wearing headphones.

Garry is sponsoring the bill, which is set to come before the committee on Transportation Monday.

Honolulu, Hawaii recently passed a similar law.
